Workovers are also known as *quot;Overnight Exchanges.*quot; And more often than not the name is quite fitting. Workovers are just like splits, except the visiting missionary also spends the night.
Several months ago, before these two Elders had been brought into the mission home, we asked their mission president to arrange for the boys to have a workover. Apparently no arrangements were necessary, however. Elder Brown was already set to go on an overnight exchange. Elder Hardt had set it up.
The mission president had been watching these two boys ever since their companions (inducted members of The Order) had scouted them as candidates for the higher priesthood. Mostly he had his eye on Elder Hardt.
Both Elders were still fairly green, but Elder Hardt had recently been called as a District Leader. At his first meeting with the mission president as a district leader, Elder Hardt wanted to know what he should do if one of his Elders was masturbating?
The mission president calmly told him that masturbation could lead to greater problems, but in and of itself wasn't a big deal.
*quot;It's going to happen. Elders are still mostly teenagers, full of hormones. If I made a habit of sending home every missionary who masturbated, I'd loose almost all my missionaries. There are bigger issues to think about. Just ignore it.but always bring it to my attention.*quot;
Elder Hardt couldn't stop thinking about his conversation. And frankly, he felt like he had a license to masturbate without feeling guilty.
As a district leader he loved using overnight exchanges as a way to encourage the other Elders to not feel guilty about masturbating either.
